Using Searches to Display Filed Snips
Previous  Top  Next

When you File a snip for long term storage PageSnip indexes the searchable content of the snip.

This means that the full text of the snip along with the Page Title, Description and Keywords (tags) that you used when you saved the snip can be used to search for the snip.

In the PageSnip Manager when you click the Search button, you see this screen:

The sections of the Search screen (below the toolbar) are:

Select a Search Mode

PageSnip has two different methods of searching for your filed snip:

Fuzzy Search

A fuzzy search is a fast way to search for a term because it looks for it in the Page Title, Description, Keywords (tags) and in the first 10,000 characters of text that was extracted from your snip when it was filed.

Most articles for the web are written from the "Top Down" (meaning that the most important content is usually at the top - especially in the case of articles) In a fuzzy search this works quite well because PageSnip can search for the term in both the content that you entered (Page Title, Description, Keywords) and in the first part of the saved content of the snip.

Web Style Search

The other search method that PageSnip uses is a Web Style Search. In this mode ONLY the searchable content from the snip is searched, but the entire text is searched for matches.

Note: when using the Web Style Search - the content that you typed in for the Page Title, Description and Keywords are NOT searched.

The next section of the screen is the Search For entry box and the Clear button:

The Search For box is the entry field where you type in what your searching for.

Note: Simple searches work best (one or two words). They will be the fastest and they will produce more search results.

If you try to type a complex term or sentence, then ONLY the searchable content that matches it exactly as you type it will be found. So this is one of those cases in life where sometimes "less is more".

If you make a mistake you can use the backspace key or click the Clear button to start over.

Starting your Search

After you type in your search term you can press ENTER or click View on the toolbar to start the search.

Then the search results screen will be displayed and any snips that contained the term you were searching for will be listed.

Note: the search results view that you see will be different depending on which search mode you used.

Fuzzy Search Results

If you are using the Fuzzy Search when you click View your results will be displayed like this:

You will notice that this looks very similar to the list of snips that you see when you are using the SnipList method to locate a snip.

Web Style Search Results

If you are using the Web Style Search when you click View your results will be displayed like this:

clip0221
The Web Style Search displays the search term along with some of the content from the snip. The results look similar to what you are used to seeing when using the Internet search engines (which is why it is called a Web Style Search).

Displaying the snip

To display the contents of a filed snip from the Web Style Search just click the hyperlink (just like you do when surfing the web)

Navigating the search results

If there is more than one page of results you will see a link at the bottom of the screen page that will let you click to go to a different page of results. There may also be a Next and Previous link depending on where you are.
