Creating and E-Mailing a PDF File
Previous  Top  Next

Thanks to the PDF-XChange print driver, PageSnip has the ability to create very high quality PDF files without requiring that any Adobe PDF creation tools are installed.

You can create a PDF of any web full page or from a snip taken by PageSnip.

The PDF can be viewed (with your default PDF viewer) and also emailed (with your default E-Mail client) after it is created.

The PageSnip PDF Creation screen looks like this:

The layout of the PDF Creation screen is:

The Toolbar

The toolbar has these buttons:

clip0075
The Cancel button exits without creating a PDF.

clip0076
The Create button starts the PDF creation process with the content loaded and using the settings and information displayed on this screen. If you checked the options to View and E-Mail the PDF then those actions will be taken after the PDF is created.

clip0077
The View Content button gives you a chance to "preview" the web content that will be included in the PDF before it is created.

Note: Some websites take a long time to load all the content as they are pulling it in with scripts from multiple sources or building it dynamically from a database. It is a good idea to click this button and then use the scrollbars to view the entire page BEFORE you click the Create button.

When you click this button the screen will change to show you a live preview of the content that will be used to create the PDF:

clip0087
Note: The "View Content" button will change to say "View Settings" after you click it.

clip0088
When you click the View Settings button - the screen will change back to the one shown at the top of this help section.

clip0078
Check the View PDF after creation option if you want PageSnip to load the new PDF in your default viewer after it is created.

clip0079
Check the E-Mail PDF after creation option if you want PageSnip to launch your default E-Mail client with the new PDF as an attachment after it is created.

Other parts of the screen:

clip0080
The PDF Content Load Status is a progress bar that should help you determine when all the web content has been loaded and the PDF is ready to be created.

Note: This is not a 100% accurate indicator. As mentioned above, some websites take a long time to load all the content as they are pulling it in with scripts from multiple sources or building it dynamically from a database. It is always a good idea to click this button and then use the scrollbars to view the entire page BEFORE you click the Create button.

clip0081
The Source URL displays the location where the PDF is created from. This can be a web URL or it may show the source as coming from the PageSnip webserver (if you are creating a PDF of snipped content).

clip0082
The Save To Location shows you where PageSnip will store the newly created PDF file.

The default location is into a folder called PDF Files under your My PageSnips folder.

clip0093
You can click the [...] button at the end to select a different folder.

Then you will see this Browse for Folder window:

clip0089
Navigate to the folder where you want to save the PDF (the name will appear in the Folder field) and Click Ok.

Click Make New Folder if you want to create a new location below the selected folder name.

Click Cancel if you change your mind.

clip0095
If you select a different folder and want PageSnip to use that as the default location when it creates PDF files in the future, click the Default button to save your selection.

clip0083
The PDF Filename shows you the name that will be used to save this PDF. PageSnip will automatically construct a name for you based on the source URL.

clip0094
You can change this yourself or click the [,,,] button to select a existing filename.

Then you will see this window:

clip0090

To choose an existing file, click it and then the OK button.

Click Cancel if you change your mind.

Note: If you select an existing file you need to pay attention to the action that PageSnip will take if the file exists.

clip0084
If you select the name of an existing PDF file, PageSnip will use your selection here to determine what action to take.

Your choices are:

·Replace the file - just as the statement says, the existing file will be replaced with the new one.

·Insert new pages at the start of the file - your new content will be inserted at the start of the existing file.

·Append new pages to the end of the file - your new content will be appended to the end of the file.

clip0245
If you select the option on the toolbar to E-Mail the PDF, PageSnip will use these settings.

E-Mail Subject - this is the text that will appear on the Subject line of the new E-Mail. PageSnip will create a default subject line for you based on the URL where the snip was taken.

Compress the PDF attachment - if you select this option then the PDF file will be compressed into an industry standard ZIP file format before it is attached to the email. This can results in a smaller file attachment and it can also assist in sending the PDF into some corporate environments that might otherwise block PDF attachments to E-Mail.

clip0246

When a PDF is created, PageSnip will automatically set the document properties that are a part of the PDF.

PageSnip automatically populates the Title, Subject and Author based on information where the snip was taken. No keywords are populated for you.
