File a Snip
Previous  Top  Next

In addition to short term management of snips by the PageSnip Assistant, you have the ability to "File" a snip for long term storage with the PageSnip Manager.

You file a snip by clicking the File button in the PageSnip Assistant

clip0054
The File button opens a window that allows you to transfer a snip (and all the associated files for it) from the temporary storage area managed by the Snip Assistant into the long term storage area controlled by the PageSnip Manager.

Snips can be associated with one or more "SnipLists" (groups of associated snips). This allows you to browse through filed snips in a way that makes sense to you.

When you file a snip, you also get to enter your own meaningful page title for the snip, write a brief description of it and associate one or more keywords (tags) to it.

The standard data collected by PageSnip when you acquire the snip (Date, Time, URL, etc) are also filed with the snip.

The File a Snip screen looks like this:

The File Snip screen is made up of these sections:

The Toolbar

The toolbar has these buttons:

clip0178
Cancel - click this button if you decide that you do not want to file this snip.

clip0176
File - click this button after you have entered all of the filing information and selected the SnipLists that you want associated with the snip.

Snip Information

clip0161
The Snip Information section displays the following information:

URL - the location where the snip was taken

Snip Date - the date the snip was taken

Snip Time - the time the snip was taken

Snip Type - the type of snip

PageSnip has different modes that can be used to capture information in different ways.

The Snip Types are:

·HTML - the snip is captured with HTML formatting (this is the "Add Selection" option on the context menu)
·TEXT - the snip is captured with HTML formatting, then the text is extracted by PageSnip (this is the "Add Text" option on the context menu)
·PAGE - the entire page is downloaded and saved (this is the "Add Page option on the context menu)
·IMAGE - a image is captured (this is the "Add Image" option on the context menu that appears only when the mouse pointer is over a image)
·CAPTURE - this is a screen capture of a user selected area (this is the "Screen Capture" option on the context menu)

Filing Information

clip0232
PageSnip allows you to use your own Page Title, Description and Keywords (tags) to personalize the way your snip is filed.

A Page Title will be generated for you based on the where and when the snip was taken, but you can change it to anything meaningful to you.

clip0233
NOTE: The Move Page Title button will move the generated page title down to the description line when you click it. This is convenient when you want to keep the generated page title as searchable content yet still enter your own page title. This is a one-way operation.

The Description lets you store your own comments about the snip

The KeyWords are terms that mean something to you and that you might type in when searching for this snip among your other filed snips.

clip0234
Searching

After you file your snip - all of the information you enter for Page Title, Description and Keywords will be a part of the searchable content using the "Fuzzy Search" method. The "Web Style Search" will only search within the content of the snip itself.

SnipLists

PageSnip allows you to associate one or more SnipLists (groups of related snips) when you file a snip.

The physical snip is only stored one time on your computer but you can associate it with as many SnipLists as you like.

After you file the snip, you can use the PageSnip Manager to display a list of all the snips in any SnipList.

Note: it is not necessary to add a SnipList as all snips are added to a common "All Snips" list, but using the SnipList feature is a great way to organize your file snips.

clip0235
The list on the left side scrolls up and down and you can also click in the list and then start typing to locate the name of a SnipList that you have already added.

For example if you type the letter Z the list would scroll down to the first SnipList starting with the letter Z (or the closest match to that letter).

Managing your SnipLists

You can use the Insert, Change and Delete buttons to add, edit or delete entries from the SnipLists.

clip0164
The insert button adds a new entry to the SnipList. It appears like this:

clip0165

Then just type in your new SnipList name and press Enter. The new name appears in the list

clip0167

Changing the name of a SnipList

clip0168
If you make a mistake (such as the spelling in this example) just select the name to edit and click the Change button. Then make your corrections and press Enter.

clip0169

Deleting a SnipList

clip0170
To delete a SnipList, select the name to delete and click the Delete button.

Note: When you delete a SnipList, all of the stored snips that were associated with that name will no longer be associated with it. The physical snips will still be there and you can still access them with the "All Snips" option (or by using the Search feature) but the links to the name of the SnipList you delete will be removed. Even if you immediately add the same name back to the SnipLists - the links to the previously filed snips are still lost.

When you click the Delete button you will see this message:

clip0171
Click Yes to complete the deletion or No to cancel the action.

Note: You can create as many different SnipLists as you want to create. There are no limits.

Managing SnipList Associations

Once you have added the SnipList names that you want to use, you associate the snip to be filed with those names by adding the SnipList names to the Selected SnipLists box.

Adding a SnipList Association
You can do this in two ways:

1) Double-click a name in the SnipList column with your mouse
2) Click the Add button

clip0172

Removing a SnipList Association

To remove a SnipList name from the Selected SnipLists box select the name to be removed then click the Remove button.

clip0173

To remove all of the names from the Selected SnipList box, click the Clear button.

clip0174

All of the SnipLists that you have added will appear in the Selected SnipLists box:

Filing the Snip

clip0176
When you have entered all your filing information and selected your SnipLists click the File button to complete the task.

PageSnip will move the snip and all the files associated with it from the TempSnips folder into the PermaSnips folder, add it to the lists of filed snips, build the relationships with your SnipLists and index any searchable text in the snip for the Search feature.

Then you will see this screen:

When you click Ok you will be returned to the Snip Assistant.
